What Is SEO and Why Is It Important?

SEO stands for “Search Engine Optimization.” SEO is the process of increasing your website’s relevancy and visibility. The greater visibility on search engine result pages, the more likely you are to garner attention and attract prospective customers and clients.

SEO is a fundamental part of digital marketing. Search engines like google, bing, and yahoo are the primary source of digital traffic. There are billions of online searches conducted each year. Most of the intentions behind each search is for information about products/services. And when people search with those intentions, you want to be at the top of the list! A higher ranking on the search page means greater traffic and increased sales for your business.

5 Easy Seo Tips That Will Help You Gain Visibility

  1. Claim Your “Google My Business” Profile

This should be the first step on your business to-do list. Google My Business is a free public profile or listing that appears in search results on Google. It provides prospects with immediate information about your company, products, and/or services. Once you have ownership of your profile, add resourceful information, introduce upcoming events, upload photos, etc. Make your page attractive and full of helpful information.

  1. Understand and Use Keywords

Keywords are words and phrases that people type in the search bar. For example, if you were looking to buy pants, you may type in “men skinny jeans.”

Most businesses have an idea of the keywords they want to use, but it is impossible to know everything that people search for. That’s why it is important to do research. You can use online “Keyword Explorers” that report on the data and stats of keyword usage. Google Autocomplete and Google Keyword Planner are free.

Keywords are a critical component in the ranking algorithm. Keywords determine whether the content is related to the user’s search. Not only should keywords be used in title tags and meta descriptions (#4 & 5 on the list), but also in your actual content.

  1. Know the Difference Between Search Intents

What do people search online for?

-Navigation: a person wants to find a specific website (youtube, linkedin, etc.)

-Information: a person wants information about a topic (how-to, tutorials, ect.)

-Transaction: a person wants to buy a product or service (vitamin c, bicycle, etc.)

By understanding these intents you will be able to manipulate your keywords. For example, if you are selling a service or product, you should use a transactional keyword.

  1. Optimize Your Title Tag and Make A Good First Impression

Title tags appear in search results, not on your page. It’s an HTML tag that identifies a web page. A Title Tag is the first and lasting impression that determines whether someone will click on your page. Think of it as a book cover. Keep in mind your title tag should be similar and relevant to the site it’s being redirected to. You can always change your title tag later, so compile a list of titles to try out. Make them attractive.

  1. Create Enticing and Informative Meta Descriptions

Meta descriptions appear below the Title Tag. Include keywords. Google will bold the keyword in the meta description, thus making your page seem more relevant. This can result in a click!

Meta descriptions have a 150 character limit, and google may rewrite yours. That’s okay. Just try to use descriptive and informative language and go with what happens next.

Here’s an Example of a #1 Ranked Search Result labeled with the above terms. I searched “how to make a hot chocolate bomb”
